Building a Dormer

I built what’s called the cheeks following the plan given to create two sides of a Dormer. The rafters make up what looks like the rib cage of the build and the ridge acts like the spine

I then used the plan to find what’s known as the ridge height, then used tools to get this perfect between the two sides.

This requires careful measuring and cutting then once this is all formed. I have to calculate as specified by the plan to create a gable ladder on the front and back and sides of the dormer. This requires lots of careful planning & measuring and cutting to ensure accuracy and correct placement.

I then connect this roof back to the main roof of the home, this is called making a valley. I then installed timber level to the ridge and connected everything together.

New House Build

Two photos of a house finished built.

Externally, I installed the vertical cladding (the roof’s metalwork perimeter), the down pipes for the guttering on the perimeter of the roof.

I also constructed the wooden cladding (image below right). I placed waterproof membrane behind it and used my level to set the first course on the bottom and build up on top of it to create what you see.

For the big three way UPVC doors on this property, there is a whole steel framework present which I had to work around. I cut on a 45 degree angle timber to be used as fixing points for the windows and doors. Without this there was too much room between the steel and the windows. I then used the heel and toe method to get everything correct. I installed all of these frames and the glass into the frame as well.

I also completed internal works on this project which can be found here

I installed this oak window and the glass, using what’s called the heel and toe method.
